Zakat payments surges in 2011

ABU DHABI -- Subscription of Zakat, the obligatory due on a Muslim’s wealth, went up by 30 percent in 2011 in comparison to the preceding year.
Levied at the rate of 2.5 percent on the possessions, the Zakat made mandatory by divine ordinance, is used for the welfare of the needy people.
The Zakat Fund announced today that AED 89.5million was received by the Fund as Zakat in 2011.
Secretary General of the Zakat Fund Abdullah Al Muhairi attributed this increase in the Zakat payments to the trust and confidence of the people on the Fund and the transparency it keeps up.
